Guapo
Bom in Cáceres, Mato Grosso, Milton Pereira de
Pinho, known as Guapo, descends from an old family that
goes back to 1725, when Antonio de Pinho Azevedo, a
pioneer settler from Lamego, Portugal, arrived in Cuiabá,
the capital of the province of Mato Grosso, and married
Dorotéia dos Prazeres.
Guapo's father played the viola, the backlands' typical
guitar-like instrument. His uncle was a singer, who
sang in Portuguese, Spanish, and Guarani. His paternal
grandmother was a pianist. His maternal grandfather
was a cururueiro, a player ofthe folk viola. Guapo received
a good education from his father, a teacher, mathematician,
and physicist, who thought it important to train the
ear in all kinds of music, so as to be able to distinguish
their quality. Life in the Pantanal with its wealth
of sounds, bird songs, and animal voices had a marked
influence on Guapo's development. Also influential were
life among the people, dances, saint´s feasts,
and other popular festivities. From his mother, a river
washerwoman, he inherited a taste for river legends
and myths. The blend of paternal and maternal influence
produced a keen interest in science and sensibility
for popular empirical knowledge. At age 18, Guapo began
to play the guitar and has never stopped. He has always
appreciated the arts, particularly painting and poetry.
He lived for a short time in Goiânia and for a
couple of years in Rio de Janeiro, followed by ten years
in São Paulo. He studied Latin American Music
and the Mato Grosso rasqueado in the neighboring countries
(Argentina, Bolívia, and Paraguay). Back in Cuiabá,
Guapo joined musicians Vera, Zuleika, and Marques Carai.
Pooling their knowledge together, they formed Vanguarda
Nativista, which would later decodify the Cuiabá
rasqueado and trace its origin.
The long list of Guapo´s accomplishments include
participation in various musical projects, composition
of soundtracks for vídeos—one of which,
Animando o Pantanal, received awards in China and France
and another was composed for an epiosode ofa TV series,
CD recordings, publication of work on the origin of
the Cuiabá rasqueado, foundation of Rasqueado
Fellowshíp, and performance in many shows, including
one devoted to regional integration, in which Argentina´s
renowned singer Mercedes Sosa also participated.
